Hong was born in Cheongyang town, Cheongyang county in South Chungcheong. He is a South Korean actor, broadcaster and restaurateur. He was a male model and actor before causing considerable controversy in his home country when he came out as gay in 2000. 

When Hong was young he doesn't eat the yolk of the egg if it's broken. He also helps his parents to sell goods at their blanket shop. His appearance is different since he was young. When he was in Junior High School, he felt something special for one of his playmates, by then he felt confused about his sexuality.

Hong came out as gay in 2000. He had a boyfriend who was from Netherlands. They loved each other so much. At first, his boyfriend doesn’t know that he is a gay. He had just found out when they met. The man was married and he told his wife about it. He chose Hong over his wife. The wife went to Korea, when she met them she didn’t say anything but "It's enough." and they had divorced. Unfortunately their relationship had ended very fast, because Korea has a very conservative culture. Hong always introduced him as a friend only. Once, his boyfriend told him "I don't want to be your shadow." They’ve always fought about it. Afterward his boyfriend went back to U.S.A to find a job and he had an affair with another guy. The only reason why he lost his love was that he wasn't confident that he’s a gay. He took their separation as an opportunity to come out as gay.
