Let’s look at the design issues.
Design of PE piping system in offshore is no much different than the design undertaken steel pipeline in offshore.
First, wall thickness should be determined to resist inner and outer pressure loads.
Second, pipeline should be checked its stability under water.
Third, the span’ effect should be checked to ensure its integrity on span between concrete collar.
Forth, the concrete collar structure analysis should be performed.
Lastly, the sinking analysis should be performed before installation in the site.
Each design step will be followed with brief explanation.
Slide 8
When we design required wall thickness of PE pipelines, three criteria could be checked. These are bursting criteria, deflection, and compressive stress induced from burial load.
Wall thickness could be determined as well known industrial standards such as AWWA, API and ISO.
This first equation is the sample equation as shown in the AWWA. Pressure rating should be less than the right hand side considering several design factors.
Second and third equations are also AWWA based and applied for design of wall thickness.
